In industrial fastening, screws are defined by four primary attributes: Head Style, Drive Type, Thread Pattern, and Material. Selecting the right combination is critical for ensuring structural integrity and preventing mechanical failure.

Anatomy of an Industrial Screw

A screw’s performance is determined by how it interacts with the material and the tool used to drive it.

Head Styles

The head style determines whether the fastener sits flush, provides a decorative finish, or offers high torque resistance.

  • Countersunk (Flat/Oval): Sits flush with or below the surface. Standard in woodworking and cabinetry to avoid snagging.

  • Pan Head: A slightly rounded top with a flat bearing surface. The “all-purpose” industrial head for metal and plastic.

  • Hex Head: Designed to be driven by a wrench or socket. Used in heavy-duty machinery where high torque is required.

  • Socket Cap: A tall, cylindrical head with an internal hex drive. Preferred for precision machinery and tight spaces.

Drive Types

The drive (or recess) dictates the tool required and the amount of torque that can be applied before “cam-out” (the bit slipping out).

  • Torx (Star): Six-point star design. Highly resistant to cam-out; standard in automotive and electronics.

  • Phillips: The most common; designed to slip out under extreme torque to prevent over-tightening.

  • Robertson (Square): Extremely popular in North America for woodworking because the bit “sticks” to the screw, allowing one-handed driving.

  • Hex (Allen): High torque transfer; common in industrial equipment and furniture.
